Salty Fermented Lemonade or Limeade

Salty Lemonade is nature's sports drink. It contains the electrolytes and trace mineral that we need when sweating, along with a bit of sugar that can be helpful for keeping our energy up. And if its made with preserved lemons (or limes), it provides the health and digestive benefits of fermented foods too.

As you make it again again, try dialing back the amount of sweetener. Learn to enjoy the balance between sweet and sour rather than just the sugar rush!

1 Serving (250mls)

Ingredients

1/8 of a salty preserved lemon in brine or 1/4 a salty preserved lime in brine (find a recipe on the internet or purchase them from your supermarket)

Sweetener of your choice, to taste (start with 1 teaspoon natural sugar or raw honey)

A few mint leaves (optional)

Crushed ice

250mls sparking or still water

Method

Aggressively muddles the preserved lemon (or lime), sweetener, mint leaves (if using), and ice with a drink muddles, mortar and pestle, blender, or whatever means convenient. It does not have to be completely uniform. Add the water and stir. Serve in a tall glass with a metal or cardboard straw.
